Playrooms and our outdoor playground / park

Play has an important role in the healing process for children. When children have access to play and activities, they may feel less anxious about being in the hospital. Play also allows children to grow, develop, and communicate, just as they would if they were outside of the hospital. Inova Children’s Hospital has several areas that promote play and activities.

Playrooms 

Each unit has its playroom, designed to give children a safe space to play and have fun. These playrooms are open during the day to pediatric patients and their siblings while Child Life specialists and volunteers are in the building. Specific hours are posted for each room.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times in the playroom. The adult can be an adult family member, a volunteer or a staff member.

We maintain the safest environment possible by utilizing a dirty toy bin and cleaning toys after each patient use. Food and drink are not permitted in the playrooms.

Each playroom has items for all ages, from infants to teens. We also have a variety of crafts and games for children to enjoy.

Our Medical/Surgical floor also has a Teen Lounge, designed to give teens a place to hang out and get out of their rooms.

Outdoor park

The Hitt Family Children’s Park is a beautiful outdoor space for our patients and families. Located just outside of the Inova Children’s Hospital lobby, the park is open to all pediatric patients and their families.

For security reasons, the park is not open to the general public and is accessed through the hospital lobby.

The park is open seasonally during daylight hours. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Eating and drinking are not permitted in the park. Use of the park may be limited during special events or activities.
