Medical Director

Dr. Seo-MayerPatricia W. Seo-Mayer, MD

Patricia W. Seo-Mayer, MD, is a board-certified physician in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology. She received her medical degree from the University of Toledo (2002) and completed her residency and fellowship training at Yale University Medical Center.

She grew up in a family of doctors and served as an AmeriCorps volunteer after college, providing cancer education and support to underserved families. She realized that she could impact the lives many people by being a physician, and always loved working with kids. She chose nephrology because the types of conditions affecting kids in this field are fascinating, require critical thinking, and can often have a good outcome.

Dr. Seo-Mayer enjoys spending time with her husband, three kids, and parents who also live nearby. They also enjoy wide open spaces, cooking together, and creating messes. She has been named a "Top Doctor" by Washingtonian Magazine in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

  • Pediatric hypertension
  • Kidney stones
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Congenital nephrologic and urologic abnormalities/disorders
  • Renal failure

Nephrology Treatments

  • Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) – Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring is the gold standard for evaluating blood pressures in a patient's normal environment and can help determine if high readings are sustained or if they are situational.
  • Dialysis
    • Acute and Chronic Dialysis – We offer both inpatient and outpatient dialysis, including Continuous Renal Replacement, Hemodialysis, and Peritoneal Dialysis.
    • Home Peritoneal Dialysis training and follow-up care
  • Multidisciplinary care for children with kidney disease, including dedicated Nephrology Nurses, specialized RN Navigator, Social Worker, and Pediatric Dietitian services.
  • Transplantation for children with severe renal failure

By streamlining treatment into a single convenient location wherever possible, the team hopes to ease the strain that undergoing treatment can put on families. Inova's full-service program offers diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of infants, children, and adolescents with nearly every kidney disorder and related complications, including (but not limited to) blood and/or protein in the urine, chronic urinary tract infections, bedwetting, pediatric hypertension, kidney stones, renal insufficiency, congenital nephrologic and urologic abnormalities/disorders, and renal failure.

Preventive care programs

For patients with conditions like hypertension, chronic kidney disease or recurrent kidney stones, we offer tailored treatment strategies for each child, including consultation with a dietician who gives families dietary tools to help prevent the onset or progression of disease.

Prenatal counseling

Expectant parents can receive genetic testing and prenatal counseling to help prepare for the birth of a baby with a renal disorder or urologic abnormality.

Integrated care

The team works closely with colleagues including urology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, and cardiology to address the needs of children with multiple disorders in one location.

Renal sonography and Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)

In-office renal sonograph and blood pressure monitoring ensures patients don’t have to travel to multiple offices for initial diagnostic imaging or regular monitoring.

Urinalysis

On-site urinalysis allows us to accurately determine the presence of underlying renal disorders.

Transplantation

Resources and support necessary to preserve renal function while awaiting kidney transplantation, and also to assist patients and families adjust to life after kidney transplant.
