Cardiac Imaging

Inova's specialized cardiac imaging procedures include:

  • Fetal echocardiography detects heart problems before birth, allowing for earlier medical or surgical intervention once the baby is born. Transthoracic echocardiography is the most common form of noninvasive real-time imaging performed at Inova. Using a hand-held transducer on the chest and abdomen, we can examine children’s hearts for structural or functional irregularities. Transthoracic echocardiograms can be performed on children of all ages and sizes.

  • Transesophageal echocardiography (heart scan with endoscopy) guides and facilitates surgical and catheter-based procedures, and 3D and intracardiac echocardiography enables better visualization of the heart chambers and valves.

Our team of experienced, certified pediatric sonographers work in tandem with cardiologists to produce comprehensive, high-quality pictures of the heart. We monitor program quality by reviewing the correlation between pre-operative imaging and surgical findings. Our echocardiography lab is accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission.
