Welcome to the Pediatric Residency Program at Inova Children’s Hospital
About the Program
Inova L.J. Murphy Children's Hospital has been educating residents and medical students for more than 25 years. Our Pediatric Residency Program integrates the academic rigor of a university-based hospital with the specialized focus of subspecialty pediatrics, complemented by a supportive and close-knit environment.
Broad Clinical Experiences:
- Residents gain a solid foundation in general pediatrics while being exposed to a broad range of complex pathologies requiring specialized care, including cardiothoracic surgery for congenital heart disease and care at the NCQA-recognized Inova Cares Clinic for underserved children.
- Through hands-on experience in inpatient, emergency, and outpatient settings, residents directly engage with a wide spectrum of clinical scenarios, benefiting from interaction with top-tier subspecialty faculty and mentorship from pediatric hospital medicine and pediatric emergency medicine fellows.
- Residents develop expertise in broader aspects of healthcare, including patient advocacy and public policy, enhancing their overall understanding and outreach in the field.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
At Inova Pediatric Residency, we deeply value and embrace individuals of all races, ethnicities, ages, gender identities, sexual orientations, and religious backgrounds, including those who are underrepresented in medicine. We are dedicated to fostering unity through diversity and inclusion, and we aim to recruit, retain, and develop individuals who embody this culture of acceptance.
Residents provide care to a diverse patient population across a broad geographic area. All residents, regardless of their continuity clinic location, spend one month annually at the Inova Cares Clinic for Children (ICCC), a National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA)-recognized Patient-Centered Medical Home for children up to 21 years of age. The clinic predominantly serves uninsured or Medicaid patients, with approximately 80 percent identifying as Hispanic/Latino and over 20 languages spoken by patients.
We also offer volunteer opportunities and a fourth-year elective (available by application only) for individuals underrepresented in medicine (URM).
